Skylar Ronson texts me the moment he arrives outside the apartment complex, and manages to locate me the minute I step foot outside of my apartment.

“Everything okay?” the tall blonde man asks as I step off the final few steps.

“Everything’s fine,” I reply. “Why?”

“I dunno. You just seem… a little on edge.”

“Oh. That.” I shake my head. “I just had a fight with my roommate. That’s all.”

“Oh.” Skylar frowns. “You still wanna go out?”

“I’d rather be with you than him,” I reply, a bit boldly at that.

Skylar offers a small smile and a nod before popping the passenger’s-side door open and saying, “After you.”

He crawls into his side of the car not long after I have buckled myself in, then pulls out of the parking lot and begins to make his way into the deeper parts of Beaumont.

“So,” I say, “where are we going?”

“I found a nice restaurant that’s usually pretty low-key. Quiet. Perfect for us to talk and get to know each other.”

“About what I said a few minutes ago—” I begin.

“Hey,” Skylar says, cutting me off before I can continue. “Seriously. It’s cool. I get having fights with your roommates. I have ‘em with mine sometimes, too.”

“I think mine’s a little different, considering that I… well…”

“Liked him?”

I offer a short, if forced nod. “Yeah.”

“I’m not asking anything of you, Oaklynn. I just want to get to know you, maybe make a new friend. I can only imagine what it’s like, adjusting to life in a new city, a new school.”

“Thanks, Skylar.”

“Don’t mention it,” he replies, then turns his head back to the road before asking, “So… how do you feel about Mexican food?”

“I love it.”

“Good. Because you’re about to have your mind blown.”
